Self Reliance

So here's my reply to the literature assignment:

The two aspects I chose to talk about and discuss in a self reliant person's (Emerson's) point of view are: social networks and fashion trends

Social networks not only allow us to stay connected with people, but also inform us about their opinions on certain topics and ideas. Nowadays, it has become very common to follow and agree with the opinions of such people and celebrities to the extent that it is almost rare to find a person with an honest opinion of his or her own and not one influenced by others. This  limits our thinking and creativity and furthermore makes our world very dull and monotonous. The same can apply for fashion trends. Just because certain items of clothing have suddenly become popular, that doesn't necessarily mean that we shouldn't wear what we want to and express ourselves in our own way. Regardless of all those trends that come and go, we should maintain our individuality and be who we want to be and not just clones of others.

November 25

So I seriously didn't notice it was my birthday today until I looked up at the date on the corner of our white board in class. "November 25...That rings a bell, doesn't it?", I told myself. What does your birthday mean to you? Sure you grew a year older, but is that just it? Isn't everything you posses like knowledge, love, memories, and maybe even hatred growing with you? And instead of celebrating the year that has passed and you've added to your age, shouldn't we be celebrating the new year or better yet chance we've been given in life? No one gets to live forever. No one. So, I believe we should stop delaying and start taking action, whether in fulfilling our dreams, trying new experiences, making new friends, reconnecting with old ones, or simply just changing for the better. Life should mean more than just cakes and parties. It is way more valuable than that; so why not cherish it while we can?

Happy birthday to me & everyone else who shares the same birthday! <3 =D

Rain!

So here in Jeddah, KSA, rain is one of the very few things that gets us all worked up. That's right, the people who inhabit this huge, dry desert get happy over just a droplet of rain.Take what happened today for instance; we (students) were going through this day like every other until that moment we saw some clouds appear in the sky. And in less than an hour, it started raining. The school would later inform us that we are to leave early for some reason (obviously the rain). Although it may not seem like much, but to us here, it makes us feel like we are actually going through a change of season, even if it is just a sprinkle of water. And to some (many, actually) others, it means more vacation and early dismissal from school. At least we're all happy, right?

Mermaids?

So last week, my friends and I had this discussion over the existence of, wait for it, mermaids. Honestly, even if they aren't real, I'd like to believe they are. I mean okay, not like Ariel from "The Little Mermaid' real, but still. And they don't necessarily have to be like this human/fish hybrid monstrosity either. Just the fact that such amazing creatures could exist somewhere in this world waiting to be found is fascinating.
